Brainy Shake Boost: Turkey Tail, Lion’s Mane & Cacao

I have finished with my radiation and first set of chemotherapy. Before starting my second chemotherapy set, I wanted to incorporate some valuable supplements. I have spent the past few weeks researching, reflecting, and exploring options that may support my recovery, energy, and immune system. I am not here to claim miracle cures—but I believe that what I put into my body matters.

I found three supplements I will begin to incorporate in the morning with what I now lovingly refer to as my “Brainy Shake.” The shake itself is a powerhouse—made with carrot juice, ginger juice, orange, and apple, blended with frozen berries and Vega Protein. It tastes like something between a juice bar creation and a health-packed smoothie—and it has become part of my daily rhythm. I take comfort in the fact that this morning ritual is something I can control, something nourishing and healing I can look forward to each day.

To this base, I am now adding Turkey Tail supplement, Mycobrew Coffee (which includes Lion’s Mane mushroom), and 100% Cacao. Each one of these has promising research behind it, and together they form a trifecta of support for my brain and overall wellness. Here is a breakdown of why I chose each one and the science behind it. I encourage everyone to speak with their own doctor and do their own research, as every diagnosis and body is different.

Turkey Tail

Turkey Tail (Trametes Versicolor) is a medicinal mushroom that has been studied for its potential cancer-fighting properties. I first read about it while still recovering in the hospital after my craniotomy. The more I looked into it, the more I became intrigued by its widespread use, especially in integrative oncology practices outside the United States.

Several studies have been conducted on this mushroom. Not all support its benefits specifically for treating Glioblastoma, but many do show promise in improving immune function and outcomes for various types of cancer. The most notable compound in Turkey Tail is Polysaccharide-K (PSK). According to the National Cancer Institute:

“Polysaccharide-K (PSK, from the mushroom T. versicolor) is an approved mushroom product used for cancer treatment in Japan.”

PSK has been found to support immune function and improve survival outcomes in certain cancer types when used alongside standard treatment. Although there is no definitive study for Glioblastoma yet, the safety and potential benefits of Turkey Tail made it worth trying in my routine.

After reading testimonials from others in the brain cancer community and reviewing research summaries, I chose to add it to my daily shake. I did find this brand to be reputable. LINK TO BUY

Mycobrew Coffee

Let us be honest—everyone needs a little pick-me-up in the morning. But when that pick-me-up can also benefit your brain? Even better. Mycobrew Coffee includes Lion’s Mane mushroom, a nootropic fungus that has gained a lot of attention for its cognitive benefits. I never imagined that mushrooms would become part of my wellness routine, but here I am, learning and evolving with each week.

I first came across Lion’s Mane while researching natural ways to support brain function. One article that stood out was from the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, which discusses findings from trials on Lion’s Mane and its effects on memory and neuroplasticity. In short: it helps the brain grow new connections, which is something I need more than ever right now.

In Popular Science, journalist Baisas (2023) reported:

“Pre-clinical testing found the lion’s mane mushroom had a significant impact on the growth of brain cells and improving memory.”

For someone recovering from brain surgery and undergoing intensive treatment, that statement hit me hard. I wanted anything that could support cognition, mental clarity, and overall focus. Brain fog is real—and it is frustrating. Anything that might help me feel sharper, even a little bit, is worth exploring.

Also, traditional coffee has been a struggle for me. While I used to love the ritual, it now triggers too many gastric issues. Mycobrew Coffee, with Lion’s Mane, offers a gentle alternative with added benefit. I add a bit into my shake or drink it warm with oat milk. It is smooth, earthy, and helps me ease into my day with clarity and intention. LINK TO BUY

100% Cacao

And then, there is chocolate—yes, chocolate! Not the sugary kind, but 100% Cacao, pure and bitter, loaded with polyphenols and antioxidants. I never imagined that chocolate could serve a greater purpose beyond comfort and indulgence, but the science is impressive.

According to Oncology Nursing News, cocoa and its compounds may help inhibit the growth and progression of cancer cells. In her 2021 article, Harris writes:

“Cocoa and its main polyphenols have been reported to interfere at the initiation, promotion, and progression of cancer.”

That was more than enough for me. I have now added unsweetened cacao powder into my morning shake. It is rich, earthy, and gives the whole thing a deeper flavor—plus, knowing that it may actually fight inflammation and support immune defense makes it even better.

Incorporating cacao has also given me something to look forward to—it feels like a treat without guilt. If you are someone like me who enjoys chocolate but wants it to serve a purpose, 100% cacao may be your best friend. Just be sure it is unsweetened and unprocessed—pure cacao. LINK TO BUY

Why These Three?

The biggest reason I chose these three supplements is that they are gentle, widely studied, and rooted in both traditional use and emerging science. I am not chasing fads. I am seeking options that may support my healing alongside standard treatment—not replace it. I have learned to value both Eastern and Western approaches to care, and I believe they can work together beautifully.

It is also worth saying: every decision I make is in conversation with my medical team. While some doctors are skeptical of supplements, mine appreciates that I do my research and bring them in on what I am taking. I want to feel informed, empowered, and confident in the choices I make for my body.

I believe the best outcomes come from combining the strength of science with the wisdom of nature—and that is what these three supplements represent to me. I am not looking for a miracle. I am looking for sustainable, thoughtful support during this journey. I know I still have a long road ahead, but I am learning to walk it one thoughtful step at a time—with intention, with care, and with hope.
