Discovering Comfort and Healing with Cancer: Nettleflower Tea from Mendocino

Embracing Healing Spaces Along the Cancer Journey

Part of my healing journey with cancer has included taking trips with my family, and we recently discovered a charming spot on the Mendocino Coast called Little River Inn. It's a cozy, quaint place where we can enjoy our own balcony overlooking the ocean and a fireplace to warm up by in the evenings. During our visits, we’ve found a few favorite local spots, like Trillium Café, GoodLife Café & Bakery, and the Mendocino Tea Company.

These brief retreats away from daily treatment routines bring a needed reprieve. They allow space for reflection, relaxation, and a connection to nature that can be deeply healing. Cancer can take a toll mentally and physically, and having a serene place like Mendocino helps me reconnect with life outside the medical world.

Discovering the Healing Power of Nettleflower Tea

On one memorable trip to Mendocino, we wandered into a unique store named Corners of the Mouth, housed in a historic red church building that became a worker’s grocery collective in 1975. This shop, brimming with organic products, caught my eye. I ended up purchasing a bag of Organic Crystalized Ginger and a Nettleflower Tea from the Mendocino Tea Company.

I frequently discuss my search for organic products because they can help reduce exposure to pesticides and chemicals often found in commercially produced items. For me, these chemicals can exacerbate issues like gastric problems and inflammation, making my cancer health struggles even more challenging. When you’re already juggling the effects of cancer treatments, even small additional irritants can feel like massive obstacles. That’s why every choice I make about what I consume matters to me now more than ever.

I chose the Nettleflower Tea for several reasons. Firstly, I was already familiar with most of the ingredients and their potential benefits, which made my decision easier. Tea can be tailored to address specific health concerns, and this particular blend includes nettle, peppermint, spearmint, and bachelor’s button petals—each known for their therapeutic properties.

Why These Ingredients Matter During Cancer Treatment

  • Nettle: Known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and potential anticancer properties. It also supports kidney function and helps flush out toxins from the body, something incredibly useful during chemotherapy cycles when the liver and kidneys are under stress.
  • Peppermint: Effective in reducing inflammation and alleviating gastrointestinal discomfort. For cancer patients like me, peppermint is not just a comfort—it’s a necessity when your stomach feels like a ticking time bomb.
  • Spearmint: Helps regulate body temperature, prevent infections, and provide essential nutrients with antioxidant benefits. It’s slightly sweeter than peppermint, which creates a balanced taste, something small but meaningful during a time when food and drink often lose their appeal.
  • Bachelor’s Button Petals: Aid in reducing inflammation and digestive issues like stomach ulcers and constipation, with some research suggesting they might help combat cancer cells, though evidence is limited. They add not only benefit but beauty to the experience—because sometimes, you need beauty to counterbalance all the harsh realities of cancer.

At the time, I was dealing with the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, which can be incredibly taxing on the body. This tea quickly became a favorite, providing a comforting, soothing experience that felt like a warm blanket on a cold night—a much-needed solace during my cancer treatments. The peppermint and spearmint contributed to this comforting sensation, and the tea helped alleviate many of my symptoms, reducing my need for prescription anti-nausea pills.

Creating Ritual and Routine with Nettleflower Tea

Every evening, I make a point of brewing a cup of Nettleflower Tea. This ritual became a grounding moment, a gentle bookend to days filled with chaos, appointments, and sometimes pain. Making tea became more than just steeping herbs—it became my pause, my breath, my way of reclaiming control over something in a life that cancer had thoroughly upended. Even if everything else was spiraling, I could count on that single, perfect cup of comfort.

Creating routines during cancer care is important. It gives you something to anchor to. Something to choose. Because so much of this disease is about losing choices. You don’t get to choose when your hair falls out, or whether your food tastes like metal. But you do get to choose your tea. You get to choose your moments. And for me, this tea gave me a moment I could look forward to every single day.

Continuing the Cancer Journey with Natural Wellness

If you find yourself in Mendocino, be sure to visit the Mendocino Tea Company, or at least order from them online—you won’t be disappointed. They offer a variety of teas, and I'm particularly intrigued by their Mushroom Cacao Tea, which features an organic blend of four mushrooms, maca, and cacao. I've written before about the neurological benefits of mushrooms and cacao, and I’m excited to try this blend. I’ll share my thoughts once I’ve had a chance to experience it.

Beyond this single blend, I think the reason the Mendocino Tea Company has made such an impact on me is that it reminds me that cancer is not just about surviving—it’s about healing. There’s a difference. Surviving means pushing through, but healing means finding comfort and connection and meaning wherever you can. Even if that’s in a warm cup with petals floating on top.

This small discovery reminded me that healing is not always found in the hospital or through medication. Sometimes, it’s in a cup of tea shared with loved ones, a breath of sea air, or the moment your body sighs in relief from something as simple as warmth and calm. Cancer has taught me to seek these moments out and to never underestimate their power.

Whether you’re navigating your own cancer journey or supporting someone who is, I encourage you to find rituals and moments that matter. Explore local products, ask questions about ingredients, and experiment with herbal support. And most importantly—find your version of a warm blanket on a cold night.
